As I mentioned in a few previous posts, I recently ordered a Manduka eKO yoga mat due to the fact that it was skidless and I needed some extra grip when going into the downward dog position. In addition to providing superior grip, the Manduka eKO mat is also eco-friendly product that doesn’t contain foaming agents and plasticizers — stuff that is toxic and commonly found in other yoga mats.
The Manduka eKO is a hefty yoga mat. It is 5mm thick and weighs 5 1/2 pounds. When rolled out, it measures 71″ long and 26″ wide and is currently available in 4 colors: Moss, Lava, Ember (my choice), Aqua, and Sand.
While the eKO mat is supposed to be extremely durable, I can’t honestly back that up yet as I’ve only had the mat for a week now. Manduka does have a great reputation for making extremely high-quality yoga mats that last for many years, so I don’t really have any concerns in the durability department.
As far as grip stickiness goes, this mat was definitely the best out of the bunch that I’ve reviewed so far. The surface has a sticky, textured layer on it that provides pretty good grip and the mat is cushioned which adds to the comfort factor as well. Overall, I would give the Manduka eKO mat a 9.5 out of 10 for grip at this point. This rating will likely get even better as the mat breaks in.
Another thing that I like about the Manduka eKO mat is the fact that it does not have retain “memory” when it is rolled up. Once you unroll the mat, it lays completely flat and you won’t have to deal with annoying edge roll.
And last but not least, for those of you who make a conscious effort to support eco-friendly products with your buying power, you’ll be happy to know that Manduka’s eKO mat is made from 100% natural, non-Amazon forested tree rubber. It’s the only “eco yoga mat” on the market with non-toxic foaming agents. Because of this fact, when the eKO mat is disposed of and biodegrades, it leaves behind no toxic residue.

1Hi FLB,
I’ve been watching your video blog and checking up on this blog periodically for a few weeks now. Today was my first day and it is hard but I think I am at a place where I want to be physically fit bad enough. Also, because I want to finish something I start. Thank you so much for sharing all of this. I know there are alot of people out there sharing their stories but I latched on to yours. Keep up the great work!!

2@Michelle: You’re awesome! Thanks so much for the comment…
This program works incredibly well, you just have to follow it exactly as it’s laid out and don’t cut any corners (diet included). Remember that it will be especially difficult early on and results won’t come overnight, but you’ll see huge improvements soon enough as long as you stay the course.
Congrats on getting started with the program Michelle and if there’s anything I can do to help out, all you have to do is ask.
Keep me posted!

3Sweet info on the Yoga mat FLB.
I’m in recovery week 1 and wish I had it yesterday. I’m going to see if I can find one locally and if not order on line ASAP.
Thx,
Jaydee

5Man, once again, great blog and great results.
I have a Danskin exercise mat that I have been using for the past 4 months and while it works pretty well for most things, I find that during downward dog and other poses where I have to really hold my legs far apart (like getting deep on the Warriors and their variations) that the mat STRETCHES a little bit, which is annoying. I’m guessing the eKo doesn’t do that. What other mats have you reviewed?
Also, is it still stinky? Would washing it off with warm soapy water help or is it just the nature of the mat to smell like, well, whatever it smells like?
By the way, even though I still can’t do all the moves as smoothly as Tony and Crew, I still really enjoy Yoga X and I am glad that it is a part of the program.

6@Prophet: No, the eKo mat doesn’t stretch so no worries there. I’ve reviewed several that were purchased locally but didn’t do the trick, I can’t recall the brand names and they were all returned.
I’ve been on vacation and am getting back to the workouts today, so I’m assuming that the mat still as a smell to it. I would imagine that the smell will become less noticeable with some more use.
