The Reebok Heart Rate Monitor provides extremely accurate readings without having to use an awkward chest strap. To check your heart rate, simply press the touch sensors. It couldn’t be any easier.

The Reebok Heart Rate Monitor has a large, easy-to-read night vision display which features the time of day, calendar, and daily alarm. The watch monitor delivers an extremely accurage ECG heart rate and the alarm includes high and low target limits.

While it’s not an absolute necessity, the Reebok Heart Rate Monitor is nice to have as it will maximize your results by keeping you in the optimal cardio training and fat burning zone.

The Manduka Plyometrics Mat is a super-thick, shock absorbing mat that will provide the extra cushion needed for your spine, knees, hipbones, and elbows during high-impact P90X plyo routines.

The “Manduka Black Mat” is much thicker and denser than other plyo mats, and the slip-resistant surface allows it to stay put extremely well on both hard and soft surfaces. The large dimensions (26″ x 72″ x 1/4″) provide maximum landing contact.

Highly recommended.

The AbTronic is another “miracle ab gadget” being peddled via T.V. infomercials, promising fabulous abs through the use of an electronic muscle stimulation belt. You can adjust the belt from low to high, but regardless of what setting you use, you’re not likely to see much in the way of results from the AbTronic.

The AbTronic targets people who are looking for fast results with little or no effort. If you’re not going to put effort into getting in shape, then you’ll honestly never see results. As always, the people in the infomercial are in excellent shape, but they certainly did not get that way by using an ab belt.

The product promises that this belt will help you lose inches in your mid section by using it for just 10 minutes per day. They claim that wearing this belt for 10 minutes will get you the same results as doing 600 sit-ups.

Even if the claims were true (which they’re not), doing 600 sit-ups daily will still not get you the results you’re looking for without adding a cardio routine with a healthy diet.

In my opinion, it’s unethical for a company to charge $70 for something that simply won’t produce the type of results advertised. Bottom line — if you want results, you’ll need to take off the AbTronic belt and get up off the couch. The inches are not going to disappear from your midsection while you catch up on re-runs of Roseanne.

The first step to getting in shape is to change your diet. Stop eating fast and processed foods and start eating lean meats, fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy. Once your diet is changed, you’ll need to add a fat-burning cardio routine. This can be something like walking, jogging, jump roping, or jumping jacks.

Since you’ll be burning fat and eating better, you’ll start to see those six pack abs when you add abdominal and core strengthening exercises like crunches.

The final verdict on the AbTronic? Save your money.

The “Ab Rocket” looks like a glorified beach chair. To use the Ab Rocket, you sit on the seat which is a couple inches from the ground as your back is supported by 4 back rollers. The back rollers are there to support your neck and back while also giving your back a massage.

On each side of the Ab Rocket, you have handles so you can hold on during your workout. The workout is basically meant to target the abs.

As with many ab machines, the Ab Rocket advertises that those who use this machine will lose fat in their core abdominal area. As great as that sounds, no ab workout equipment will ever eliminate fat.

The truth is — a person can do 600 crunches everyday, but if they consistently eat the same foods and do not have a fat-burning cardio routine, the fat will stay. You may feel your muscles getting stronger and even feel that your stomach is harder, but it’s going to be buried under layers of fat.

As far as quality of construction goes, it’s not uncommon to hear of the Ab Rocket breaking within a few months. The machine itself is made to fairly low quality standards, yet it still being sold for nearly $100.

The resistance springs, which are meant to help you bring your body forward, break very easily. The resistance springs do not serve much of a purpose unless you’re a first level beginner.

There is an attachment you can buy for the Ab Rocket that is supposed to help you work your arms, but it’s a waste of money since you’ll get better results using dumbbells and classic pushups.

As great as it sounds to do crunches and a back massage at the same time, save your money. If you want to lose fat, stop eating foods that are high in fat and calories. Start eating lean meats, plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and low fat dairy products.

Also, make sure to get a minimum of 30 minutes of cardio per day whether this be taking a walk, jog, or doing jumping jacks. Add in some crunches and core exercises and I think you’ll see far better results than the Ab Rocket could deliver at any price.

The “Ab Scissor” is another Body by Jake workout machine. With as many products as Body by Jake develops for the abs, you would think they would eventually come out with one that is worth buying. Think again…

At first glance, the Ab Scissor looks like it would work your shoulders because you sit on a small bench and then grasp the handle bars above your shoulders. A lot of people do end up using their arms instead of their abs. Even after doing the exercises correctly and using my abdominal muscles, I still didn’t feel that I was getting much of a workout.

Like most of the Body by Jake fitness equipment, the Ab Scissor is not the sturdies piece of equipment in the world. The seat is way too small, so it’s not very comfortable especially for somebody who is overweight.

In my opinion, I just don’t see the point in paying $250 for a bulky ab machine when you can get better results for free? Also — due to the less than impressive construction, it probably won’t be long before something on the Ab Scissor breaks. Instead of taking a chance with equipment that promises often times unrealistic results, try a comprehensive home workout program for sculpting your abs.

When it comes to six pack abs, you’re really not going to lose any weight using the Ab Scissor (or with any abdominal workouts for that matter), so you need to add cardio to your home fitness routine. Cardio workouts will burn fat — without burning fat, those ripped abdominal muscles will be hidden under layers of fat. Mix in a healthy dose of ab and core exercises along with a healthy, low fat diet play and you’ll be well on your way.

In my opinion, there are much better uses for your hard-earned than forking it over for an Ab Scissor (or any other over-priced ab machine). Save your money and get great abs the old fashion way with a healthy diet, effective abdominal workouts, and fat-burning cardio routines.

The “Ab Rocker” is one of several abdominal products by the fitness line Body by Jake. This piece of equipment has a chair that sits about five inches off the ground, so you’re able to move with a rocking motion. You place your feet in front of you and rock yourself to supposed great abs.

The Ab Rocker is cheaply made, so don’t expect it to last a lifetime. It isn’t the easiest ab equipment to use and the movement seems jerky, as opposed to the smooth ab workout shown on the infomercial. You would think that something called a rocker would be comfortable to use, but it’s definitely a bit awkward.

There is a risk of injury while using this product because it’s easy to fall backwards while doing this exercise. If you decide to try the Ab Rocker, make sure there is nothing heavy or breakable behind you.

Once you have completed the workout, there isn’t much of a noticeable abdominal burn. I would say that this piece of equipment is probably best for a beginner — however, I wouldn’t recommend it based on the fact that it’s unstable.

The Ab Rocker costs about $70. There are plenty of ab workouts that you can do from home that will pose less risk of injury, be more effective, and are free. For example, the bicycle is a great exercise and it actually does work all the abdominal muscles.

Just like any workout routine, you cannot get fit abs by only doing crunches (on a machine or the floor). You have to have an entire body fitness program that includes a healthy diet, fat burning cardiovascular routine, and strength building.

Instead of spending the money on an Ab Rocker, a comprehensive exercise program incorporating core and ab strengthening exercises would be a much better choice.

The Ab Lounge is marketed through a popular infomercial showing people of all ages getting to sit in a comfortable chair while getting an abdominal workout. Like most infomercials, the Ab Lounge falls short of its promises.

The Ab Lounge looks like a reclined lawn chair with handles to grip on the sides and overhead. There is also a bar to rest your feet while getting a workout. It’s comfortable to sit in, which isn’t a surprise since the name suggests it’s a lounge chair!

The Ab Lounge is definitely not for anybody considered obese, so that’s a clear disadvantage to the product. I actually wouldn’t recommend this to anyone over 200 pounds because it’s built poorly and someone weighing too much could end up falling to the floor during the workout (or before they even start the workout).

While doing crunches with this chair, you feel little to no burn in your abdominal muscles. As great as that might sound if you’re trying to get an easy workout, if you can’t feel the workout in your muscles — you’re not getting results.

The manufacturers of the Ab Lounge claim that you will burn fat in your stomach while you also lose weight. These claims are unrealistic. It’s impossible to lose weight without changing what you eat and including a good cardio workout with your routine.

You’re going to get a much better abdominal workout performing regular crunches, so spending $100 for this piece of bulky home fitness equipment seems completely unnecessary.

Instead of buying the Ab Lounge, save your money (or buy an actual recliner) and get six pack abs at home the old fashioned way — with a proper diet, 30 minutes of cardio per day, and crunches. It’s a free workout and you’re going to see much better results in the end.

The makers of the Ab Flex claim to provide an abdominal workout that puts pressure on the abs, causing the muscles to contract.

This is another piece of workout equipment that promises big results in a small amount of time. With the Ab Flex, you’re supposed to see results in a few days (unrealistic with any workout) by using the product for three minutes per day. Three minutes is supposed to be the equivalent to two-hundred sit-ups.

It doesn’t matter how many sit-ups you do with any workout machine, you won’t see big results unless you’re burning fat as well. You need to establish a good cardiovascular routine in order to lose pounds, otherwise your toned muscles stay hidden under layers of fat.

The product itself is very simple to use, but definitely not worth the money in my opinion. To use this for a workout, hold the Ab Flex to your abs while performing crunches. This gives you additional resistance with each rep, which is the reason you’re suppose to get a better workout.

Most people buy equipment to avoid doing crunches, but this just adds more work to the crunch. I don’t think the Ab Flex is horrible, but it looks more like a kid’s toy than a piece of serious fitness equipment. You’ll get much better results using dumbbells during your crunches, which are a lot cheaper than the Ab Flex.

There are two ways to use dumbbells for crunches. The first way is to hold the dumbbells to your chest and the second way is to hold the dumbbells over your head. You may want to start with the dumbbells to your chest because the overhead method is more intense and not recommended for beginners.

When it comes down to whether or not you should buy the Ab Flex machine, I would save your money. Instead, do crunches with dumbbells and add cardio and a healthy diet to your fitness routine. All this can be done at home and it will cost a lot less than buying the Ab Flex!

The Ab King looks like an average weight bench with an overhead handle to assist you with crunches. By working out on the Ab King for three minutes per day, you’re supposed to see firm abs in less time than with traditional crunches and sit-ups.

The Ab King claims that the ease of movement assists people with performing abdominal exercises that work the abdominals in a way regular crunches cannot, which is the reason people can get away with only using it three minutes per day. As a basic rule, anytime a machine says you can work out in a significantly low amount of time per day, be warned that it’s usually a false claim and exaggeration.

The Ab King costs $150, which is a lot of money to throw down on a machine that may not get you the results it claims.

The bottom line is you cannot have tone abs without a combination of strength building core exercises and a cardiovascular routine. A cardiovascular routine is going to help you meet your fat loss goals. If your abdominal area currently has a roll of fat that you desperately are trying to rid yourself of, the Ab King is not going to simply make that fat go away.

If you’re really looking to get in shape, a healthy diet is the first place to start. Make sure you’re cutting fatty and high calorie foods from your diet. If you’re working out, but then turn around and order a Whopper from Burger King, you just destroyed any results you achieved from your workout.

I’m not a big fan of the Ab King because I simply don’t see it as a way to effectively build an all-around, better physique. In my opinion, you’ll have more success doing crunches and core exercises as a part of an overall strength building workout. Fortunately, crunches do not involve assembling equipment or adding an unnecessary charge to the credit card!

Looking for an honest Ab Coaster review? Read on as we cut the fluff and take a look at what you can honestly expect from this piece of home exercise equipment.

The Ab Coaster is a machine that works the abs in a bottom up motion, which is different than most ab workouts on the market. It has a seat that sits on an arched track. You place your knees on the seat and pull your way up the arch using your abdominal muscles.

The makers of the Ab Coaster claim that you will start seeing results in less time. They also claim that you can stop the hard work and “coast” from a size 10 to a size 6 while using this product. Companies like Ab Coaster are trying to sell their products by giving them names that suggest a relaxing workout. Unfortunately, an effective abs workout is anything but.

You could spend hours on the Ab Coaster every day, but without the extra steps of getting your heart rate going and the cutting of unhealthy foods from your diet, you’re not going to physically see results. As with most abdominal machines, the Ab Coaster makes some huge promises that tend to set people up for failure as it’s impossible to lose weight with an abdominal workout alone.

Another thing that I don’t like about the Ab Coaster is the fact that it costs about $400 and takes up a lot of space. That’s a lot of money to pay if you’re not going to do cardio five days out of the week for thirty minutes per day along with an ab workout.

Bottom line? It takes hard work to get six pack abs and you need to develop a comprehensive strength building routine to do this effectively. This can include crunches, planks, and bicycle riding. It’s also important to change your diet and do cardiovascular exercises to burn off excess layers of fat.

I would steer clear of the Ab Coaster since it doesn’t offer all the components of a good workout routine. Instead, start walking, do some crunches, and eat healthy. All things that can be done from home for free.

Do you have an Ab Coaster review that you would like to share? If so, please submit it below — I would love to hear it.

There are several accessories that are nice to have, but not absolutely needed. The P90X Chin-up Bar on the other hand is a must-have…

In my opinion, the P90X Chin-Up Bar is one of the most brilliant pieces of fitness gear in existence. It is a fairly inexpensive piece of equipment that doesn’t take up much space, and will provide one of the best upper body workouts imaginable.

Installing the chin-up bar is super simple and it’s easily mounted to any door frame without drilling. Simply slide it into place and then rest it against the framing — no drilling is needed and it won’t damage the door frame a bit. If you want to remove it and store it in the closet or under your bed, just lift, slide, and hide.

The P90X Chin-Up Bar is professional-grade and made of heavy-gauge steel. It will hold up to 300 pounds and the handles are covered in high-quality foam for maximum comfort and grip.

As I mentioned in a few previous posts, I recently ordered a Manduka eKO yoga mat due to the fact that it was skidless and I needed some extra grip when going into the downward dog position. In addition to providing superior grip, the Manduka eKO mat is also eco-friendly product that doesn’t contain foaming agents and plasticizers — stuff that is toxic and commonly found in other yoga mats.

The Manduka eKO is a hefty yoga mat. It is 5mm thick and weighs 5 1/2 pounds. When rolled out, it measures 71″ long and 26″ wide and is currently available in 4 colors: Moss, Lava, Ember (my choice), Aqua, and Sand.

While the eKO mat is supposed to be extremely durable, I can’t honestly back that up yet as I’ve only had the mat for a week now. Manduka does have a great reputation for making extremely high-quality yoga mats that last for many years, so I don’t really have any concerns in the durability department.

As far as grip stickiness goes, this mat was definitely the best out of the bunch that I’ve reviewed so far. The surface has a sticky, textured layer on it that provides pretty good grip and the mat is cushioned which adds to the comfort factor as well. Overall, I would give the Manduka eKO mat a 9.5 out of 10 for grip at this point. This rating will likely get even better as the mat breaks in.

Another thing that I like about the Manduka eKO mat is the fact that it does not have retain “memory” when it is rolled up. Once you unroll the mat, it lays completely flat and you won’t have to deal with annoying edge roll.

And last but not least, for those of you who make a conscious effort to support eco-friendly products with your buying power, you’ll be happy to know that Manduka’s eKO mat is made from 100% natural, non-Amazon forested tree rubber. It’s the only “eco yoga mat” on the market with non-toxic foaming agents. Because of this fact, when the eKO mat is disposed of and biodegrades, it leaves behind no toxic residue.

As I previously mentioned, I’ve had problems with my hands slipping when going into downward dog on yoga days. Up until now, I’ve been folding the end of my mat over a few times to improve the grip — but it’s still not a great solution…

Last week, after reading a lot of yoga mat reviews online, I ordered a skidless yoga mat by Manduka called the “eKO mat”. It arrived yesterday and while I haven’t had a chance to officially test it out during a P90X yoga workout yet, it appears to be just what the doctor ordered.

The Manduka eKO mat is a fairly sticky yoga mat that provides added grip for those times when sweat causes hand slippage. It is available in 5 different colors (moss, lava, ember, aqua, and sand) and is made from non-Amazon harvested tree rubber. It’s also free of toxic foaming agents and plasticizers commonly found in mats, such as TPE, POE, and other rubber mats.

I’ll be sure to post a more detailed update on how this non-slip yoga mat holds up during Yoga X this week…
